As a sub-consultant of Stantec, GROUPE provided civil land development and surveying services for the demolition of The University of Mary Washington’s Chandler Hall and its replacement with a new 130,000-square-foot student center. GROUPE’s responsibilities included coordination with the architect and the various University Departments to ensure a functional center blending with both the environmental landscape and the historic campus. GROUPE’s tasks included stormwater management, grading, water, sewer, and storm transport, assisting in achieving LEED Silver Certification, and continued coordination with geotechnical and environmental sub-consultants. The challenges included fitting a new, larger building into a picturesque campus while accommodating a multitude of existing wet and dry utilities and saving existing trees that contribute significantly to the campus’s ambiance. In addition, GROUPE provided construction stakeout services for the utilities and onsite improvements associated with the new building.
